How Much Americans Spend on Halloween Every Year?

This year, more than 171 million Americans will celebrate Halloween, which will cost about $10 billion, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). In 2021, Halloween celebrations in the US were almost as big as they were before the pandemic. It is still one of the biggest shopping days of the year. In 2021, Americans spent a record $10.14 billion on the spooky holiday, and this year they are expected to spend $10.6 billion.

On average, each person who celebrates Halloween will spend around $100 on costumes, candy, decorations, and greeting cards. Everyone knows that number goes out the window if you love scary movies. When you add in decorations, greeting cards, and pet costumes (which have become a $350 million a year business), it’s easy to spend $100 to $200 on Halloween, which is a lot for a holiday that most people think of as a kids’ holiday.

How much do people in the United States spend on costumes and decorations for Halloween?

Nine out of ten millennials want to do something for Halloween. But the way these younger people celebrate the holiday has changed a lot. Some of them will host or go to parties, but more of them are excited to decorate their homes, give out candy, and dress up in costumes.

But how much do people spend on Halloween costumes in the United States? It was thought that people would spend $3.3 billion on Halloween costumes in 2021. And only 46% of people will dress up. The most popular costume for adults is a witch. More than 4.6 million adults plan to dress up as a witch. Also, 52% of Americans plan to decorate their homes. This means that Americans will spend $3.17 billion on decorations each year, which is the most they have spent in the past four years.

The National Retail Federation found that 70% of Halloween shoppers plan to buy decorations and will spend $2.4 billion on them. Another 49% plan to decorate their homes or yards, and it’s likely that many of the same people will say this. This can be a problem if you buy new, full-price decorations every year to add to your collection, but there are ways to save money.

One thing I do is buy new things after the season is over. I never buy Halloween decorations or other holiday decorations when the season is already in full swing. Even if there are discounts, you’ll pay a fraction of even the discounted prices if you wait until November 1 or a few days after to get what’s left.

Even though you might not find big items like yard inflatables or moving monsters, I can usually find a few smaller decorations to add to my Halloween look. The day after Christmas, there are a lot of outdoor holiday lights and party supplies on sale.

How much do people spend on candy for Halloween?

Now, we’re really getting into the Halloween spirit. Candy, which is the most important part of the whole Halloween celebration, brings in an amazing $2.5 billion just in September and October. 94.3% of people surveyed by the National Retail Federation said they would open their wallets to buy these sugary treats.

It’s also not cheap. This year, the average person will spend $24.43 on candy. This is a big chunk of the average $82.93 spent on Halloween as a whole. But it’s not hard to see how it gets there. Premium chocolate brands like Hershey’s, Mars, M&M’s, and Reese’s cost between $10 and $12 for a large bag with servings sized for kids and snacks. Some of these bags cost between $5 and $7 per pound, which is pretty expensive for regular chocolate.

But there’s a way to save money: Before I buy a bag of candy, I look at the price-per-pound number on the price tag and compare it to the number of pieces in the bag and how much the bag weighs. This is what most of them have. Even though bigger bags may seem like they are the best deal, smaller bags are often cheaper in the long run.

Let’s not forget that when you buy holiday food or candy, you’re also paying for packaging and holiday marketing. Brands add the cost of unsold post-holiday items to the price of the bag you’re buying, so you’ll save even more if you buy bags from the regular candy aisle instead of the seasonal food section. You can, of course, save even more money with app savings and coupons.

How to spend less on Halloween?

You could easily spend too much on Halloween, but you don’t have to. There are a few things you can do to make sure you don’t spend too much on Halloween while still having fun.

  1. If you are crafty or know how to use a sewing machine, you can make your own costume.
  2. Instead of buying new costumes, you should look for used ones at thrift stores or second-hand shops.
  3. Keep decorations simple or buy them from places like dollar stores that are more affordable.
  4. Pumpkins and other decorations can be bought at small local farms or stores.

You can have a great Halloween without emptying your bank account and regretting it when the bill comes. Keep things simple and choose used or homemade costumes.

Final Words

Since more people are expected to celebrate Halloween this year, some companies have had to get ready to meet consumer demand. If you plan your Halloween shopping early, you can avoid some scary spending situations as the holiday gets closer. Then, shop the sales after Halloween to stock up and save money for next year.
